The History of the Massey & Township Public Library

The first board meeting of the Massey Public Library was held in March 1960.  Massey Public Library opened its doors October 15, 1960.  Mrs. Gwen Marshall was the first librarian from 1960 to 1980 and was helped by many volunteers.

The bookmobile service arrived from Sudbury in February, 1961.

On Saturday mornings, Mrs. Winnifred Mooney offered arts and crafts classes but her entertaining puppet shows were the most popular attractions.

Mrs. Mooney can also be credited for spearheading the fundraising for the new library building.

In 1968 the Township became affiliated with the Massey Public Library. In 1972, the two boards amalgamated and the library was moved to the old Royal Bank building.

Those sharing the work with Mrs. Marshall were: Edythe Grace, Debbie McGregor, Jean Robinson, and Jean Brouse.

Lilliane Richer became the second librarian for the Massey and Township Public Library in January 1981. Those sharing the duties were Jean Brouse, Jean Robinson and Judy Cox; followed by Jane Hale and Ann Bergmann.

July 1998 saw the amalgamation of the Town of Massey with the Town of Webbwood, Township of the Spanish River and the unorganized Townships.

Presently Lilliane Richer is the CEO of both the Massey and Webbwood libraries.

Her co-workers are:

Elizabeth Gamble – Assistant Librarian #1 & Treasurer

Ruth DeClerck – Assistant Librarian #2

Lisa RicherWebbwood Branch Librarian

Linda Lendrum- Webbwood Branch Casual

Most appreciated is the dedicated work of our numerous volunteers.
